SF Giants bolster rotation again, sign another veteran starter

For some MoviePass subscribers, last Friday turned into a horror show as their moviegoing subscription plan was terminated.

siliconbeat logo tech news blogMoviePass, the moviegoing plan that allows subscribers to see one movie a day in the theater for as low as $7.95 a month, told some customers their subscriptions were terminated effective immediately for purchasing part of a premium ticket, which is against the company's terms of service. MoviePass also said in an email to affected customers they cannot renew their accounts, according to Business Insider.

MoviePass said in a statement to this news organization that only a small percentage of its 2-million-plus subscribers was affected.

"A small percentage of MoviePass users have been removed from the system, due to violating the terms of service," said a MoviePass spokesperson. "We diligently review card transactions to prevent fraudulent activity and take our Terms of Service agreement very seriously. If individuals abuse the service, we must take action so that our model continues to be sustainable for everyone."

The statement also noted if customers feel there has been a mistake, they can feel free to reach out to the company's customer service phone number on the back of their card. MoviePass did not clarify if it will give refunds.

However, many customers took to social media to ask why they were cancelled, arguing they did not purchase any premium tickets or violate any terms of service.

That was brutal. You have wrongly terminated my account. My wife and I have NEVER used the card for anything other than regular admission. In fact we nearly always go to a matinee. I also have never been without my wife and her account was not cancelled! @MoviePass @MoviePass_CS

Can you please make a public statement about the mass account cancellations today and the lack of response by Customer Support? Was MoviePass hacked?

Other MoviePass subscribers shared similar frustrations about MoviePass's poor customer services in past interviews with this news organization.

Reece Webb, a senior solutions architect in San Francisco, said he filed a fraud complaint with the Better Business Bureau and American Express and put a Merchant Block on his American Express card. In January, he was charged by MoviePass again and had to change his billing information to prevent getting charged by MoviePass again.

"I think MoviePass will continue to lose traction as theater chains adopt similar programs," said Webb. "They continued to charge me. Yet I've never actually been able to use the service."

However, MoviePass is growing at an exponential rate since its new subscription model was announced in August. In the past seven months, MoviePass hit its 2 million subscriber mark and announced MoviePass Ventures, a subsidiary to purchase independent movies' distribution rights.

After the Sundance movie festival in January, MoviePass and New York City-based entertainment company The Orchard purchased "American Animals," an art heist drama, for $3 million.

On Monday, MoviePass announced a new partnership with Hollywood studios and theater chains, such as Main Street Theatres, a Nebraska-based theater chain with nearly 50 locations in Nebraska and Iowa. In return for accepting MoviePass's services, studios and theater chains will receive MoviePass' internal customer data and target advertising tools.

"We are thrilled to see that the studios and exhibitors have embraced MoviePass," said MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe. "In the old days, the studios would pay advertising dollars without the ability to track results. With the MoviePass platform, the studios pay MoviePass only when the MoviePass subscriber goes to the movie. This is the most targeted and direct advertising that Hollywood has ever had at the studio level."
